The OPPO A5 (2020) Assessed: Huge Battery, Excellent Value

If Oppo is a new company to you then perhaps you're unsure if Oppo makes decent phones. Fear not, however, for OPPO is well regarded in China & has spent a few years building up to the release in Europe and elsewhere, with innovative smartphones like the Oppo's Reno 10X impressing already.

Oppo A5 2020 doesn't try to be such a top level handset, but it sure does deliver a nice set of specification with an affordable price. So if you have been considering the Motorola G8 Plus or the Moto One series phone, then the savings provided by the OPPO A5 2020, and its big battery, all make a solid argument to buy.

The A5 2020 Screen And Design

Dimension: 163.6 x 75.4mm x 9.1mm
A5 2020 Weight: 195 g approx
Finishes: Dazzling White or Mirror Black
Screen: 6.5-inch, 1600 x 720 resolution
3.5mm headphone jack
Back fingerprint scan sensor

With no immediate signs the The OPPO A5 2020 is a entry-level handset. Its semi-reflective rear, emblazoned with an Oppo logo transfer and the text designed for A series, comes with a understated gloss, and its camera & rear fingerprint scanner are centrally aligned in a neat form. Problem is, the black colour of this device is more of a gray, and it is easy to get dirty, & I thought that the scanner was a bit high in its position, too close to the phone's cameras.

Yet the same can be said of the front 6.5-inch screen is huge, but not awkward, and is kept together with a neat trim bezel on top & sides & just a tiny bit towards the lower position. there is a dewdrop looking notch on the top of the screen, and this is where the selfie camera is positioned, but it's not distracting and hasn't been bothersome for any apps that we've been using. Above this is a small speaker grille, which sounds fine when making calls, something we've often found not to be the case with, say, Xiaomi phones with a close design.

However, the screen isn't the best resolution, providing HD+ resolution. That is like the 720p televisions of the older design, & while it does not appear horrible in its resolution of details, a Full HD+ screen, such as what you have with the Motorola G8 Plus. Yes, this phone is slightly cheaper than that Motorola, however those extra pixels would help make a change.

There is another annoyance with the handset's display: take off the screen guard (just as we do with all review phones) & that top layer isn't the best at defeating fingerprint smears, which is something we've hardly beheld since Huawei's P10. This does not wreck your experience, yet you may get some more rainbow smears than you'd like.

Elsewhere the OPPO A5 (2020) is equipped with a 3.5 mm headphone jack, & there is no reason you can't plug headphones in, while the bottom speaker is excellent sounding when producing audio for apps and movies.

The A5 2020 Important Specs

Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 processor
3 GB Of RAM
64 GB memory
MicroSD card expansion
5,000mAh battery
USB Type C charge
ColorOS 6.0 Android based OS

Maybe the most impressive thing about A5 (2020) is the device's battery life. Despite the body not being too thick, it is a big 5000mAh cell in there. Considering the Samsung Galaxy S10 has 3,400mAh in comparison, you'll understand potential for how much more battery capacity this handset provides.

The few days that we've been reviewing The OPPO A5 2020 , it is been delivering about 28 hours of use per charge. If you're not constantly on your phone That's easily 2 days of use. If you are on the phone for much of the time, playing games and all manner of apps, well then you will get a full day's use no dramas.

Charging the phone is not super-fast, but it's done by USB Type C, not Micro-USB that quite a few previous generation devices.

The device's is helped by a few features: the display, as we have said, isn't the best resolution display going; while its processor, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 665, isn't the most powerful COU available.

Regarding the latter point, however, this is not a problem as we've been able to play apps like Archero with no clunkiness, and while the main game South Park: Phone Destroyer has responded lag-free & and good animations. And, this chip is the same processor you'll find in Motorola's G8 Plus.

and the processor & RAM (at 3GB), can sometimes show their middling levels. Be that a couple of seconds wait for an app to load, or a buffering while your app is readying, it is only these tiny points that let the user realise you're not making use of a flagship phone.

The software on board is Oppo's ColorOS, and is a lot like the Google Android, upon which ColorOS lays, but with various additions, tweaks and layout adjustments. As a result we don't think the operating system quite as clearly as an Android phone proper. Things such as many notifications from battery management, every app being positioned over multiple screens & numbered notifications we found annoying at times.

With that being said, there are add ons such as security app for safety, high levels of customization within notifications, a side-swipe quick-access your favourite apps panel, and app duplication to allow you to use of the Dual SIM , yet the system will not draw backups for the second app.

Having 2 SIMs additionally does not disallow the possibility of expanding on the 64GB storage, as there is a dedicated microSD card slot. Very handy if you want heaps of photos, videos and apps on your device - an extra 64GB is unlikely to cost more than a tenner.

Oppo's A5 2020 Camera

Cameras:
Main: 12-megapixel, f/1.8 aperture
Ultra-wide: 8mega-pixel, f/2.25 aperture
Two 2 mega-pixel depth sensors, f/2.4
Front Facing Cmaera: 8MP, f/2.0

Camera-wise, The Oppo A5 2020 the quad camera system, now with two of those on the rear being depth sensors, and the ultra-wide camera doesn't function you can think of the system as a single camera setup.

The camera is a not fast, however it is not too bad considering this is an base model phone. We've had no worries shooting in low-light environments, while close up works very well. Something of a exception in many handsets and camera systems.

There aren't too many features. Yes, you have HDR (high dynamic range) to remove those shadow and to highlight details, you will not find help for low-light shots &, like we say, there is no wide option.

You get a 2x & a 5x digital zoom, which crops into photos, but still manages has a 12MP image. And as for the ultra-wide camera, the website states "for panoramic pictures", and I assume that this sensor is just for panoramics, even with the angle of view when using this mode isn't wide. We thought this confusing.

Most of the pictures we've snapped with the rear camera will have clear appearance in good light, although low-light gives soft images. Having said that, for looking at on a smartphone screen or for sharing on socials, that is more than good enough.

On the front, there's an 8MP camera which has the usual glut of Oppo's smoothing & face-thinning effects which, we're happy to never use. Each to their own, though, we know there are fans of the 'beautification' options.

Final Verdict

If you are looking for a value phone there are many good options, the Oppo A5 2020 with this group. The battery life is great, with nearly 2 day {life|between charges, its display is {large|huge|good sized, & its CPU well equipped to deal with tasks & games.

That being said, the display could be higher-resolution and more resistant to smears, the quad camera is a total oversell, (treat it as a single 12MP main), and you may find the software not the best.

As for the money{, however,|you pay for this phone it performs adequately, the design is modern, and there's all the signs of a good Motorola G8 Plus competitor right here. And, the Oppo isn't as pricey.

OPPO A5 (2020) is the twin to the A9 2020 as it shares with it the most features: 6.5 inch screen, Snapdragon 665 CPU, 5,000 mAh battery, quad camera.
